During their most recent meeting, the Hauppauge Middle School Engineering Club soared to new heights as students tested the club’s new Rocket Drone kits for the very first time.
In the weeks leading up to their first real-world flight, students practiced with an online simulation, completing challenges and tutorials to learn the basics of drone control. Once confident in the virtual skies, the club turned its attention to drone safety and basic repair techniques, preparing for their in-person flights.
The first challenge, “King of the Hill,” brought plenty of laughter and friendly competition. Students balanced ping pong balls atop their drones while maneuvering through the air, aiming to knock opponents’ balls off while keeping their own in place.
Next, students split into teams for an obstacle course challenge. Taking turns as both pilot and “traffic control,” teammates communicated constantly, guiding each other through hoops, sharp turns, and tricky navigational elements.
The experience not only helped students hone their drone skills but also strengthened their collaboration and teamwork, making it an exciting and educational adventure for the entire club.
