Digital Citizenship

In celebration of Digital Citizenship Week, Eagle Essentials proudly partnered with the Hauppauge Middle School Library for a special project week focused on online safety, responsibility, and digital awareness. The initiative was designed to help students build critical knowledge about navigating the digital world while strengthening their research, communication, and presentation skills.

Using the Library’s Virtual Reference Collection, including the specialized eRosen database, students explored a variety of high-priority digital citizenship topics such as online predators, safe gaming, privacy, cyberbullying prevention, and responsible social networking.

Throughout the week, students in Mrs. Thompson’s Eagle Essentials class collaborated with Mrs. McParland in the library to take a closer look at the concept of digital footprints—how our actions online can shape our digital identities. Students engaged in thoughtful research, took detailed notes, and discussed how to protect their privacy and promote kindness in digital spaces.

The project’s final step challenged students to “become the teacher.” They synthesized their learning and shared key takeaways in creative formats of their choice: digital or handmade posters, Google Vids presentations, or podcasts. These projects allowed students to educate their peers on safe and responsible digital behavior while showcasing their creativity and communication skills.

By the end of the week, Eagle Essentials students had not only deepened their understanding of digital citizenship but also demonstrated what it means to be thoughtful, responsible, and empowered digital learners. It was a true showcase of learning, creativity, and collaboration in action!
