The Newton STEM Scholar Program gives Hauppauge students a head start in exploring their passion for science, technology, engineering, and math, beginning as early as 8th grade.
This exciting, accelerated track challenges students with Regents-level math and science courses and hands-on science research throughout grades 8, 9, and 10. By completing their high school math and science requirements early, Newton Scholars unlock opportunities for AP and IB courses, college-level research, and prestigious competitions in their junior and senior years.
The Pathway to Discovery
🧪 8th Grade
Students kick off their STEM journey with Regents Earth and Space Sciences, Regents Algebra, and Science Research 8. They dive into experiments, explore real-world questions, and prepare projects for the Middle School Science Fair, with chances to advance to regional competitions such as the Long Island Science Congress and the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovation Challenge.
🔬 9th & 10th Grade
The momentum builds! Newton Scholars continue with Regents-level math and science courses while expanding their research projects. By the end of 10th grade, they’ve completed all high school math and science requirements — opening the door to advanced coursework and research opportunities ahead.
🚀 11th & 12th Grade
Upperclassmen take their learning to the next level with AP or IB math and science classes and earn college credit through their partnership with the University at Albany. They showcase their research at the annual Science Symposium and prepare for national recognition through the Regeneron Science Talent Search during senior year.
Program Goals
The Newton STEM Scholar Program is designed to:
Build a strong foundation in STEM starting in middle school
Offer college-level coursework in high school
Encourage participation in research and competitive opportunities
Prepare students for success in college and STEM-related careers
Recognizing Excellence
Every step of the way, Newton Scholars are celebrated for their achievements. Students earn a Newton Apple pin at the end of grades 8, 9, and 10 — each year a new color to mark their progress — and receive a Newton STEM Scholar Certificate after completing 10th grade.
Colleges and universities are also informed of the program’s rigor through the high school profile, ensuring each student’s hard work and distinction shine through in the admissions process.
