Hauppauge High School senior Samvath Karanam has been named a Semifinalist in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program, earning recognition among the nation’s highest-achieving high school seniors.

More than 16,000 students nationwide were named Semifinalists in the 72nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented seniors now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 6,700 National Merit Scholarships, worth about $24 million, that will be awarded next spring.

To advance to Finalist standing, Semifinalists must meet several additional requirements. Approximately 95 percent of Semifinalists are expected to become Finalists, with about half of those Finalists ultimately receiving a National Merit Scholarship and earning the title of National Merit Scholar.

The National Merit Scholarship Program, established in 1955 by the nonprofit National Merit Scholarship Corporation, recognizes outstanding academic achievement and encourages students to pursue academic excellence. Each year, students from across the country compete for recognition through a rigorous selection process.

Samvath’s recognition is a tremendous accomplishment and reflects his dedication to his academics and his commitment to achieving at the highest levels.
