Patriotic music filled the air at Hauppauge High School as students, staff, veterans, members of the military, and first responders gathered for the school’s annual Memorial Day assembly — a meaningful tradition dedicated to honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.
The ceremony began with a performance of the “Armed Forces Medley” by the Hauppauge High School band, setting a respectful tone for the morning’s events. The New York City Police Department Color Guard then entered the field before the high school choir delivered moving renditions of the national anthem and “God Bless America.”
Principal Joseph Wieckhorst addressed the crowd, reflecting on the significance of Memorial Day and encouraging students to remember and honor the brave individuals who gave their lives in service to others. The assembly paused for a moment of silence in remembrance of the fallen.
Guest speaker Scott Munro, president of the Detectives’ Endowment Association, shared remarks about the importance of honoring those who lost their lives protecting their communities and country, including those lost during the September 11 attacks.
The ceremony also recognized student Aryanna Ress, who recently earned a full Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps scholarship to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
The event continued with spirited performances by the NYPD band, entertaining students with patriotic selections and familiar favorites, including “Stand By Me.” One of the morning’s highlights was an energetic drum battle between the NYPD drumline and the Hauppauge High School drumline, which drew enthusiastic cheers from the crowd.
Following the assembly, students had the opportunity to explore military and first responder exhibits, participate in fitness challenges, enjoy lawn games, and visit food trucks, turning the day into both a meaningful tribute and a celebration of community.
