In celebration of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary, Hauppauge High School seniors recently visited Forest Brook, Pines, and Bretton Woods Elementary Schools to participate in a meaningful cross-grade civic learning experience with second-grade students.
As part of their Participation in Government coursework, the seniors created original “America 250” children’s books and shared them through engaging classroom read-alouds and sparked thoughtful discussions focused on the Declaration of Independence, American history, and the significance of the nation’s founding. The elementary students eagerly listened, asked thoughtful questions, and connected with the lessons through storytelling and conversation. The high school students also greatly enjoyed the opportunity to work with the younger students and share their learning in a creative and engaging way.
This collaborative experience promoted civic awareness, literacy, and student leadership while strengthening connections across grade levels and celebrating our nation’s history throughout the district.
