HS Pi Day

Hauppauge High School students celebrated Pi Day with a fun twist on a favorite tradition while raising money for a meaningful cause. Organized by the Math Honor Society, this year’s “Pie in the Face” fundraiser flipped the script — instead of teachers getting pied, students nominated classmates to receive a pie in the face from a teacher after their class raised donations.

To make the experience even more memorable, high school technology teacher Chris Dowd and his students built a mobile “Pi Unit,” allowing the event to travel from classroom to classroom throughout the day.

The fundraiser saw strong participation across the school, with 19 classes taking part and 32 students receiving pies. Participants also received Pi Day button swag and a homemade π-shaped brownie, adding to the festive celebration.

In total, the event raised $1,110, bringing the overall fundraising total from the past several years to $2,850. Proceeds from the event supported Callie’s Crew and ChadTough, organizations dedicated to funding research and raising awareness to help defeat DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma).

Several students and classes were also recognized for their contributions. Joe Pistritto won a $50 Visa gift card through a raffle for participating students. Ms. Maiorini’s Period 5 class raised the most money, collecting $159 and earning a bagel party as their prize.
