This year, we proudly celebrated the induction of our outstanding students into both the Mu Alpha Theta National Honor Society and the Science National Honor Society. Mu Alpha Theta recognizes high-achieving mathematics students who demonstrate exceptional problem-solving skills, dedication, and a passion for advancing their mathematical understanding. The Science National Honor Society honors students who excel in scientific inquiry, research, and scholarship while upholding a commitment to curiosity, integrity, and service. Together, these inductees represent academic excellence across two of our most rigorous fields of study.
For our faculty inductees, students were invited to reflect on teachers who inspired them, supported their growth, and shaped their academic journeys. Their heartfelt words made it clear why two extraordinary educators were selected as this year’s honorary inductees.
Mu Alpha Theta Honorary Faculty Inductee: Ms. Allyson Beardslee
Students’ reflections spoke to Ms. Beardslee’s unwavering dedication and her ability to make every learner feel seen, supported, and capable. They shared how she believed in them, set high expectations, and helped them grow—academically and personally.
They remembered a teacher who explained complex topics with clarity, always going straight to the core concepts and pushing students to think critically. She made herself available whenever they needed help, whether during extra-help sessions or in brief moments in the hallway.
One student wrote that in her class they became not just a better math student, but a better student overall and a better person. Many credited her for making math their favorite subject, noting that her encouragement, structure, and steady belief in their abilities helped them achieve more than they thought possible.
These reflections paint the picture of a teacher whose impact extends far beyond the classroom.
Science Faculty Inductee: Mr. Rick Plouffe
Students also shared powerful reflections about Mr. Plouffe, describing him as a supportive, patient, and inspiring teacher who never gave up on them. They wrote that he helped them see their own potential, especially during challenging moments.
Several students shared that he taught them what it truly means to be a scientist: not just someone who knows facts, but someone who constantly asks “why?” and “what if?” His lessons encouraged them to recognize how every small process connects to create the larger picture of life.
Students recalled how he encouraged curiosity, embraced mistakes as learning opportunities, and modeled perseverance. They credited his influence with helping them grow more confident, more resilient, and more eager to help others.
One student expressed lasting gratitude, sharing that their once-indifferent attitude toward science transformed into a genuine passion for learning more about the field.
Together, these student reflections show the tremendous impact that Ms. Beardslee and Mr. Plouffe have had on the lives of Hauppauge learners. We are proud to honor their commitment, passion, and excellence in teaching, and celebrate the students who continue to rise to the challenge in math and science.
