The three Spanish Language & Culture 1 classes of Sra. Maura-Rayó colored, cut, and assembled this vibrant poster as they learned about Hispanic Heritage Month and the contributions of many Hispanics to American society. Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated annually from September 15 to October 15, honors the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.
Through this hands-on project, students are exploring the diverse achievements of Hispanic Americans. Notable figures they studied include astronaut Ellen Ochoa, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, labor leader Dolores Huerta, and writer Sandra Cisneros, among many others. The junior students also shared their research and presented what they learned about the Hispanic individual of their choice during classes on September 30 and October 1.
The collaborative poster project not only enhances students' understanding of Hispanic culture and history but also allows them to practice their Spanish language skills while creating something meaningful for the school community. Each colorful tile represents a piece of the larger story of Hispanic contributions to the United States, reflecting the diversity and unity that characterize both the Hispanic community and Sra. Maura-Rayo classroom.
