On May 28, our high school IB Diploma juniors visited the Frank Melville Jr. Memorial Library at Stony Brook University. This visit provided students an opportunity to enhance their research skills and prepare for the rigors of college-level academics.
During their time at the library, students had the pleasure of working with Mr. Chris Kretz, an academic librarian, who guided them through the intricacies of the college research process. Mr. Kretz demonstrated how to effectively access and navigate various college databases, essential tools for locating credible and scholarly information.
A significant focus of the visit was assisting students in finding scholarly sources to support their Extended Essay, a cornerstone requirement of the IB Diploma program. The Extended Essay is an independent 4,000-word research paper on a topic of the student's choice, related to one of their IB Diploma subjects. With Mr. Kretz's expert guidance, students were able to identify and access relevant academic articles, journals, and other scholarly materials, crucial for developing well-researched Extended Essays.
