Students in IB Physics and IB Sports, Exercise, and Health Science had the opportunity to work together to put their science knowledge to practical use in their collaborative sciences project. The collaborative sciences project gives Diploma Program students the opportunity to work together in an interdisciplinary team, working towards a common goal related to a real-world issue, pursued through the lens of the scientific method and using the knowledge gained in their IB science classes.

This year’s topic was “Exercise Around the World”. Mrs. Becker’s IB Physics students were paired with students in Mrs. Kulesa’s IB Sports, Exercise, and Health Science class to identify a problem, collect and analyze data, and brainstorm solutions through the lens of their respective science class. Students selected topics such as “To what extent does gravity in different parts of the world impact baseball performance?” and “How does temperature impact energy consumption in short and long-distance running?” Throughout the project, the emphasis is on the experience of collaborative problem-solving, the focus being the process rather than the product. The goal is to develop collaboration skills or find moments of inspiration that help them evolve into problem-solving global citizens of the future.
