Dave Smith National Wrestling Hall of Fame

Hauppauge Public Schools proudly congratulates longtime educator, athletic trainer, wrestling coach and 1989 Hauppauge High School alumnus Dave Smith on his induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Downstate New York Chapter’s Class of 2026.

Dave’s connection to wrestling began as a student-athlete at Hauppauge High School and continued long after his graduation. He returned to the District as an educator and athletic trainer, dedicating more than three decades to caring for and supporting generations of Hauppauge students and athletes.

His impact, however, has extended well beyond the Hauppauge community. Since 1996, Dave has volunteered as the Head Athletic Trainer for the Suffolk County Wrestling Team, giving countless hours to county practices, dual meets and tournaments while providing care and support to wrestlers throughout Suffolk County. He has also served as an athletic trainer at the Section XI wrestling championships and New York State Championships for more than 20 years.

Throughout his career, Dave has been a mentor, advocate and trusted presence for student-athletes. His expertise and dedication have helped countless wrestlers pursue their goals while emphasizing the importance of health, safety, sportsmanship and perseverance.

For Dave, wrestling has always represented much more than wins and losses. It has been a source of lifelong friendships, meaningful mentorship and unforgettable experiences, as well as an opportunity to give back and serve others.

His induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame recognizes a career defined not only by his contributions to the sport, but by the people he has supported along the way.

Hauppauge Public Schools is incredibly proud to celebrate Dave as one of our own and to recognize this extraordinary honor. His journey from Hauppauge wrestler to educator, athletic trainer, coach and mentor is a wonderful example of the lasting impact one person can have on a school community and beyond.

Congratulations, Dave, on this well-deserved honor!
