Hometown Heroes: Speaker Series Ep. 1

This school year, Hauppauge students have the exciting opportunity to meet and learn from the veterans and first responders who make a difference in our community through the new Hometown Heroes: Speaker Series.

In each session, Superintendent Dr. Murphy leads a conversation with our guests while students have the chance to ask questions, gaining insight into the lessons, experiences, and values that define a true Hometown Hero. The series highlights the dedication of local role models and fosters civic responsibility, leadership, and community connection for students.

Our inaugural episode set a powerful tone for the program. Mr. Alba’s 7th grade Social Studies class had the privilege of hearing from EMT Danielle Matteo, a lifelong Hauppauge resident and 2004 graduate, whose dedication to emergency medical response has been driven by her commitment to helping others in critical moments. Joining her was Marine veteran Giovanna Kenney, who shared her journey of discipline, resilience, and service to country.

Throughout the discussion, students learned firsthand about the challenges and rewards of careers centered on protecting and supporting others. Both guests offered inspiring messages about teamwork, perseverance, and making a difference—even when the work is demanding and unpredictable.

Our first episode has already set an engaging and inspiring foundation for what promises to be a valuable learning experience for all who participate. We are excited for our students to gain unique learning experiences while connecting with the people who help shape Hauppauge every day.
