Sweetbriar Nature Center Visit

Second graders at Bretton Woods Elementary recently had an unforgettable adventure when Sweetbriar Nature Center brought the wonders of the animal kingdom right into their classrooms. During this hands-on experience, students explored fascinating facts about mammals and discovered what makes these creatures so unique.

Our young naturalists learned about the differences between warm-blooded and cold-blooded animals, gaining a better understanding of how mammals—like humans—maintain a steady body temperature, while reptiles depend on their environment. They also explored the concept of threatened and endangered species, learning which animals need our help and why conservation efforts matter.

The highlight of the visit was the chance to get up close and personal with a variety of animals. Students observed and gently interacted with a hedgehog, rabbit, turtle, chinchilla, snake, falcon, and even an opossum. From feeling a hedgehog’s spines to watching a snake slither, the experience sparked curiosity, excitement, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
