All fourth-graders at Bretton Woods Elementary gathered in the gymnasium for a meaningful and educational assembly focused on Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). EB is a group of rare genetic disorders characterized by extremely fragile skin that blisters or tears from minor friction or trauma — often referred to as “butterfly skin.” It is an inherited condition, not contagious, and can cause painful sores on the skin, mouth, and esophagus. While there is currently no cure for EB, treatment centers on careful wound care and symptom management.
The assembly held special significance for the Bretton Woods community. One of our own fourth-grade students, Makenzie, was born with EB and courageously faces its challenges each day. Makenzie, alongside her mother, spoke to students to help raise awareness and foster understanding. Using visual posters to explain the condition, Makenzie’s mother provided helpful information and Makenzie selected several friends to assist in presenting the materials to their classmates.
A song created in Makenzie’s honor, Rock the Socks, Makenzie, is available on YouTube as part of a campaign to raise funds in support of the fight against EB. Donations can be made at: https://donorbox.org/rts2026?t=donor_wall#info.
Makenzie is an incredibly strong young person, both inside and out. Despite the daily challenges she faces, she continues to be a vibrant, joyful member of our school community, inspiring her classmates and teachers alike with her resilience, courage, and bright spirit.
