Bretton Woods Principal

This past spring, we shared the exciting news that Dr. Smalley would be stepping into the role of principal at Bretton Woods following the retirement of Mr. Gagliardi. With 24 years of experience in education — including 11 years as an elementary principal and assistant principal — and his most recent leadership in IT and Security at the district level, Dr. Smalley brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep commitment to students, families, and staff.

In July, the Bretton Woods Newspaper Club in an article in Horizons helped the community get to know their new principal a little better by asking some fun questions that go beyond the résumé. We learned that Dr. Smalley is a huge sports fan (cheering for the Jets, Mets, Knicks, Islanders, and St. John’s basketball), loves wings, pizza, and tacos, and has a soft spot for 90s rock bands like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. He also shared that he’d pick two superpowers if he could: one to spread calm and kindness when things are tough, and another to make ice cream appear whenever a celebration is in order!

When asked about school traditions, Dr. Smalley’s excitement shined through. He’s eager to keep Spirit Days going strong, would love to see a school talent show, and looks forward to greeting students in the hallway each morning. He also spoke warmly about the Bretton Woods community, saying he’s excited to partner with staff, families, and the PTA to continue creating a school where everyone feels connected, valued, and inspired.

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Smalley into his new role and can’t wait to see all the great things ahead for Bretton Woods under his leadership. Here’s to a fantastic year filled with learning, spirit, and maybe even a little ice cream magic!
