Bretton Woods hosts third annual First Responder Appreciation Day

Bretton Woods Elementary School hosted its third annual First Responder Appreciation Day, welcoming over 70 members of local fire, police and emergency service agencies as honored guests. Despite the rain, the school community came together for a beautiful indoor ceremony to recognize and thank these everyday heroes many of whom are parents, relatives and friends of our students and staff.

The morning began with the flag presentation and the Star-Spangled Banner performed by the MTA band. The students and attendees listened to three inspiring guest speakers: Robert Wind, Hauppauge High School Class of 1972 graduate, retired FDNY firefighter, and current Hauppauge volunteer firefighter; Port Authority Officer Thomas Coysh and his K9 partner, Fita; and Arlington, Virginia Police Officer Keri McCarthy, a proud alumna of both Bretton Woods and Hauppauge High School. Officer McCarthy’s father, a retired Nassau County police officer, performed a moving bagpipe tribute during the ceremony. Fifth grader Teagan Parchen gave a heartfelt speech honoring her father, an NYPD officer who was in attendance. The ceremony concluded with a stirring performance of “God Bless America” by the Bretton Woods Advanced Orchestra, conducted by Mr. Keith Demaio.

It was a powerful and emotional day, filled with gratitude and pride, as the school community honored the brave individuals who keep us safe each and every day!
