To celebrate the fall season and Halloween, fourth graders at Pines Elementary recently took part in their annual “Pumpkinology” experiment, combining math and science in a hands-on investigation.
Working in small groups, students explored the physical properties of pumpkins by measuring their height and circumference and weighing them using standard units of measurement.
The excitement continued as students made predictions about how many seeds each pumpkin contained. After estimating their totals, they rolled up their sleeves to carve open the pumpkins, scoop out the pulp and count the seeds to see how close their estimates were.
Through this engaging seasonal activity, students practiced estimation, measurement, scientific inquiry and data collection while discovering that learning can be both educational and fun!
