Hauppauge Graduate and Local Mom Simone Smith Shares Her New Book, Moose and Bailey, with District Students

Hauppauge has a special reason to celebrate the publication of Moose and Bailey, a heartwarming new children’s book by local author, Hauppauge graduate, and mom Simone Smith. Recently, Smith returned to the district to share her book with Hauppauge’s youngest readers, creating a meaningful connection between a local author and the community that helped shape her own journey.

Moose and Bailey tells the story of Moose, a gentle but anxious bullmastiff, and Bailey, a small, courageous rescue dog who moves in next door. As the two become friends, Bailey helps Moose face his fears and discover that true bravery does not mean being fearless. Through their unlikely friendship, young readers learn about the importance of kindness, confidence, acceptance, and supporting one another. Inspired by the real-life relationship between the two dogs, the story offers a sweet reminder that friendship can help us grow in ways we never expected.

The celebration began with a special recorded read-aloud of Moose and Bailey, read by Superintendent Dr. Murphy for all elementary students. Dr. Murphy even had the opportunity to meet Moose and Bailey himself, adding a personal touch to the experience. The recording allowed students throughout the district to enjoy the story together and celebrate the work of an author who has a special connection to their own community.

Following the recorded read-aloud, Smith visited each of Hauppauge’s elementary schools to read Moose and Bailey in person to second-grade students. These visits gave students the opportunity to hear the story directly from its author, connect with the person behind the book, and experience the joy of sharing a story together. Meeting someone who grew up in Hauppauge and has now published a children’s book offered students an inspiring reminder that creativity can lead to wonderful possibilities.

For Smith, returning to Hauppauge as a published author and local mom represents a meaningful full-circle moment. Her visits connected her own educational journey with that of today’s students, encouraging them to embrace their imaginations and recognize the power of their own ideas. By sharing Moose and Bailey, she offered more than a story; she provided an example of how personal experiences, meaningful relationships, and a love of storytelling can become something that touches others.

Smith’s visits were a wonderful celebration of literacy, community, and the connections that bring stories to life. Through Moose and Bailey, Hauppauge students discovered a new story while celebrating one of their own. The experience served as a warm reminder that books can inspire empathy, spark imagination, and help children see the world through someone else’s eyes.
