With a new football season just around the corner, four Hauppauge High School student-athletes and Varsity Football Coach Diesso recently joined coaches and players from across Suffolk County at the third annual Suffolk County Chapter of the National Football Foundation Media Day.
Held Friday, August 21, at the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge, the event brought together football programs from throughout Suffolk County for a preseason celebration designed to showcase student-athletes, recognize the achievements of local programs and build excitement for the upcoming season.
Representing Hauppauge alongside Coach Diesso were Senior Running Back Liam O’Connor, Junior Lineman Dominick Green, Senior Wide Receiver Christian Mooney, and Senior Lineman Cruz Vargas.
Designed to mirror the atmosphere of a major college football conference media day, the event featured divisional sessions in which coaches and student-athletes participated in moderated question-and-answer sessions with representatives from the National Football Foundation and members of the media. The sessions were professionally recorded, providing schools, families and fans with an opportunity to experience the event and hear directly from the athletes and coaches preparing for the season.
For our Hauppauge representatives, the day offered an opportunity to discuss the preparation, mindset and leadership that go into building a successful football program.
When asked how he defines leadership within the Hauppauge football program, Coach Diesso emphasized that leadership extends far beyond game day. It begins in the classroom, continues in the weight room and carries into the choices student-athletes make both in and outside of school. At its core, leadership is about how a person conducts themselves when no one else is watching.
That mindset is reflected in the work the Eagles have put in throughout the offseason.
Green highlighted the progress he has made in developing his speed and strength while also deepening his understanding of the game through studying film. For student-athletes preparing for a competitive season, that offseason work provides an important foundation for growth when the team takes the field.
The importance of teamwork was also evident in O’Connor’s response when asked who he would trust most with a game on the line. Rather than naming one individual, he pointed to his entire team, expressing confidence that any of his teammates could step up in a critical moment, make a big play and help change the game.
That confidence in one another is an important part of what makes a team successful, and it reflects the preparation and culture the Eagles have been building throughout the offseason.
The Suffolk County Chapter of the National Football Foundation has developed Media Day as part of its broader partnership with the Suffolk County High School Football Coaches Association. The annual event is one of several initiatives designed to celebrate and promote high school football, including Scholar-Athlete Brunches, the NFF Leadership Symposium, the All-Long Island Elite Showcase & QB Challenge and the Kickoff Classic.
Media Day also provides student-athletes with an opportunity to gain exposure and experience in a professional media setting, while giving members of the media access to coaches and players through interviews, photography and video.
For Hauppauge, the event marked another opportunity for our Eagles to represent their school community while preparing for the season ahead.
With the offseason work behind them and a new season on the horizon, the excitement is building. Our Eagles are ready to take what they have learned, put in the work and bring that preparation to the field.
