On Friday, September 19, students from the Youth and Community Alliance Committee and the Natural Helpers initiative, along with staff, participated in a full-day workshop focused on raising awareness about relationship violence, mental health, and suicide prevention.
The morning session was led by members of the Gabby Petito Foundation, including Gabby’s mother, Nicole Schmidt; stepmother, Tara Petito; grandmother, Mary Wickman; and aunt, alumna Mandy (Acevedo) Wickman. They shared Gabby’s story and spoke about the dangers of relationship violence, warning signs of unhealthy relationships, and ways students can support themselves and their friends. The family not only educated participants but also engaged in meaningful one-on-one conversations, answering questions with empathy and care.
In the afternoon, Katie Mercer of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention – Long Island Chapter spoke about mental health, warning signs, and resources available to those who may be struggling. The day concluded with a presentation by Kevin Hertell, founder of the Suicide Awareness & Remembrance Flag Program, who shared his mission to honor lives lost to suicide and reduce stigma through awareness and advocacy.
The workshop was filled with knowledge, empathy, and compassion. Students who attended described the day as both impactful and life-changing.
