Hauppauge High School Senior Katie Murphy Wins Prestigious Dellecave Award
Hauppauge School District is pleased to congratulate High School Senior Katie Murphy on winning the “2017 Butch Dellecave Award.” This prestigious award is presented annually to the top female and male Suffolk County student-athletes who demonstrate excellence in athletics, academics and community service. Murphy received her winning trophy on June 11, 2017 at an awards breakfast at the Villa Lombardi in Holbrook, New York. “I was shocked because there are so many great athletes who are here, so to be recognized in front of all of them is such a great honor,” she stated.
Murphy is a standout performer in cross country, basketball and lacrosse. She was a three-time New York State Championships qualifier in cross country; an All-County performer and League Player of the Year in basketball as well as one of five all-time at Hauppauge High School 1,000 point scorers; and an All-County performer in lacrosse. Murphy also has been recognized for how she “carries herself and supports her teammates.” She was awarded an unsung hero award and character award while excelling in the classroom. Murphy will continue her academic and athletic career on a basketball scholarship at Adelphi University next year.
The Dellecave Award is presented by the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, the Butch Dellecave Foundation and Newsday. The top female and male winners each receive a $1,000 scholarship. Dellecave was an educator in the Connetquot School District for 30 years. He also help found the Suffolk Hall of Fame. “It means a lot to be recognized in his honor,” Murphy stated. “He’s such a great role model and inspiration for all of us … He did a lot of things not only for athletics, but also the community.”
“We could not be more proud of Katie’s accomplishments and to have her as a representative of our High School and community,” stated Hauppauge’s Director of Physical Education, Health, Family and Consumer Science, Recreation and Athletics. “Her hard work and commitment to excellence are a fine example for all of our students.”
