Mullen and Schumann Coach Hauppauge Team to Medals and Mullen Wins Scholarship in NYS Science Olympiad Competition
The Hauppauge Middle School Science Olympiad Team competed against 39 other New York State Regional Champions at the 2017 New York State Science Olympiad Competition, which was held April 7-8, 2017, in East Syracuse, New York. “The 15 seventh and eighth grade students collaborated tirelessly as a team to excel in their technology and science events,” stated Coaches Maryann Mullen and Sheilah Schumann. “Along with Science and Technology Department Chairman Rob Wankmuller and Middle School Principal Maryann Fletcher, we could not be more proud of the team’s impressive performance in this prestigious NYS level competition.”
The Hauppauge Middle School Science Olympiad Team brought home medals from the Competition in the following events:
●5th Place, Anatomy & Physiology, Alex Vasilakopoulos & Emma Vasilakopoulos
●5th Place, Disease Detectives, Jalaj Mehta & Alex Vasilakopoulos
●5th Place, Fast Facts, Rebecca Klayman & Alex Vasilakopoulos
●7th Place, Meteorology, Alex Vasilakopoulos & Griffin Capece
In other Competition news, Mullen won the 2017 Harold D. Miller Institute Scholarship Award. The scholarship will entitle her to attend the National Science Olympiad Summer Institute at the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort in Phoenix, Arizona. The Science Olympiad Summer Institute (SOSI) is an intensive five-day program that provides the most current information about all 46 Science Olympiad events and is a unique STEM experience. Mullen commented that she “is looking forward to implementing what she learns at the SOSI to help Hauppauge Middle School’s Science Olympiad Team become even more successful in 2018.”
