Hauppauge's Rebecca Proscia Semifinalist in the 62nd Annual National Merit Scholarship Program
Hauppauge School District is pleased to announce that High School Senior Rebecca Proscia was named a Semifinalist in the 62nd Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. This academically talented student will now have an opportunity to continue in the competition to qualify for about 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $33 million that will be offered in spring 2017.
To advance to the finals of the competition, Proscia and Hauppauge High School must submit a detailed scholarship application in which they provide information about her academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment and honors and awards received. She additionally must earn SAT scores what confirm her earlier performance on the qualifying exam. The National Merit Scholarship Finalists will be announced in February 2017.
Approximately 1.6 million high school students from about 22,000 high schools nationwide took the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. Those students who scored the highest on the test advanced to the semifinals. This comes out to less than one percent of those who entered the contest.
“The entire Hauppauge School District community is honored to congratulate Rebecca Proscia on being named a National Merit Scholarship Competition Semifinalist,” stated Hauppauge High School Principal Christine O’Connor.
