Frequently Asked Questions

What time is the library open?

The library is open from 9:00am – 3:10pm

What kind of materials are available in the library?

We have many different resources for the students to use. These include: fiction and nonfiction books, magazines, videos, books on tape, reference materials, ebooks, and access to computer databases.

How often does a student go to the library?

All students come to the library once in every 6 day cycle. All classes are forty minutes long.

What do they do in the library?

During library classes we pick out books based on interest and reading ability, we read a wonderful variety of stories and literature, and we have lessons on library and research skills.

What are student borrowing privileges?

Kindergarteners may borrow one book each cycle. First graders start by borrowing one book a week. As the year progresses they may check out two books: one fiction and one non-fiction. Second through fifth graders can take out two books, and may also borrow a magazine. Items are due on their next library class. Students can renew books as often as they need to.

What is your Overdue Policy?

For Kindergartners, if an book is overdue, they may not choose a new one. For students who are able to pick out 3 items (2 books and a magazine), if all 3 items are overdue they may not choose anything new. If a student has one overdue item, they may only choose 2 new items.

What happens if an item is lost or damaged?

If this happens then there are two things that you can do. You can either pay for the item, or replace it. We will send home a notice with the price of the book. We can only accept checks made out to Hauppauge Public Schools. You can also send in a gently used book to replace the one that was lost.

What happens if I find the book after it’s paid for?

You have until the end of the current school year to get your money back. Please contact the library for more details.

What are Open Library times?

Generally the Library Media Center is open to students during the school day if they missed their usual library time.

How do you go about ordering books, etc. for the library?

We are very choosy about the materials we order. All items have either been reviewed in a professional library journal, examined in person, or suggested by teachers. All items are purchased to enhance the students' love of reading, support our school's curriculum, and enrich the library environment.
