Hauppauge Public Schools are aligned with the New York State Science Standards which are based on the Next Generation Science Standards. We offer the Amplify Science program for grades K-8 where students learn life, physical and Earth & Space sciences through a combination of hands-on activities and digital simulations. They have opportunities to read, write, model and communicate like scientists.
Starting in seventh grade, students have the opportunity to take Regents-level Life Science:Biology, a course normally taken by students in ninth grade. This course prepares students to take Advanced Placement Biology in tenth grade.
In eighth grade students can take Regents-level Earth & Space Sciences, where they can earn a credit of science toward their high school graduation requirements.
At the high school we offer all of the New York State Regents-level science courses: Life Science: Biology. Earth & Space Sciences, Chemistry and Physics.
We offer Advanced Placement (AP) courses where students can potentially earn college credit in biology, chemistry and physics. We also offer International Baccalaureate (IB) courses which students can use to satisfy the International Baccalaureate diploma. We offer courses in environmental systems and societies, and physics.
Hauppauge High School offers a wide array of science elective courses such as astronomy, forensic science, oceanography and human genetics. There is also a strong science research program with its own dedicated science research lab.
Hauppauge Public Schools has science fairs at each of the elementary schools. First place winners from each grade from each school, grades K through 6, get to participate in the Brookhaven National Laboratory Elementary Science Fair where they compete against other students with the top science fair projects from throughout Suffolk County.
Starting in middle school, students are able to enroll in Science Research 6, 7 and 8. These classes meet on alternating days during the lunch periods. Students get help deciding on a topic, designing and executing their controlled experiment and interpreting and communicating their results. Students participate in the Hauppauge Middle School Science Fair and the Hauppauge Middle School Science Showcase where they get to describe their projects to students from Hauppauge Middle School. Students can potentially advance to regional competitions such as the Junior Innovators Challenge and the Long Island Science Congress.
Students can enter the Newton STEM Scholar program in eighth grade. Students in this program take Regents-level math and science courses along with science research in grades 8, 9 and 10. Students that complete this program are Newton STEM Scholars by the end of tenth grade, The program is described in Hauppauge High School’s profile so colleges and universities are aware of this prestigious accomplishment. Students in high school science research, grades 9-12 also get to participate in the Science Symposium, where they share their research findings with the school community. They also get to participate in regional competitions such as the Long Island Science Congress and the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair.
Starting in eleventh grade, students can join Regeneron Science Research where students can earn up to 12 college credits through the University at Albany. In this course for eleventh and twelfth graders students are prepared to enter the national Regeneron Science Talent Search in their senior year.
