Science Department Courses Grades 6-12

The Hauppauge School District provides a wide variety of science courses to provide a solid science foundation for students.  Students at middle school will be exposed to three science areas: physical science, life science and Earth and space science. Students can get into the accelerated science program by maintaining a 95% average in science during sixth grade.  If recommended for the accelerated program, students take Regents Living Environment in the seventh grade.  In eighth grade, they will take Regents Earth Science.  In the eighth grade, students take either the Intermediate Level Science Exam or the New York State Earth Science Regents Exam if they are enrolled in Regents Earth Science.

At the high school level all students take two Regents-level science lab courses.  One must be from the Living Environment and the other must be from the Physical Setting. In a Regents-level course, students must complete 1200 minutes of hands-on laboratory activities and submit satisfactory lab reports.  For the third credit of science, students can take either Regents Chemistry or half-year chemistry and half-year physics.  These half-year courses focus on the big ideas, and are project-based courses that do not culminate in a Regents exam.

Students can also get involved in science research by taking the 9 through 12 Science Research Program, which can earn them up to 12 credits through the University at Albany.
