Dr. Christopher Smalley brings over 20 years of rich and accomplished experience in public education to his new role as Principal of Bretton Woods Elementary School. He began his career as a classroom teacher in New York City and Half Hollow Hills, building a strong foundation in instructional practice, classroom culture, and student engagement. He then advanced into school leadership, serving as Assistant Principal at Signal Hill Elementary and later as Principal of Wing Elementary in the Islip School District. Over 11 years in building-level leadership, Dr. Smalley became known for cultivating warm, student-centered school cultures, strengthening instructional practices, and building lasting partnerships with families. His success in the principalship led to cabinet-level roles in Islip and Hauppauge, where he helped lead districtwide work in curriculum, technology, and school safety.

Most recently, Dr. Smalley has served as Hauppauge’s Executive Administrator for Information Technology and Security Initiatives, where he led major projects that improved the daily school experience for students across the district. From expanding digital access and classroom technology to building safer, more responsive emergency systems, his leadership helped create environments where learning could thrive. By combining technical insight with an educator’s perspective, he ensured that systems supported, rather than interrupted, instruction and student connection. Now stepping back into the principalship, Dr. Smalley brings not only a proven record of school-based leadership but also a districtwide understanding of how systems, structures, and people come together to support student success.

Dr. Smalley is a trusted partner to families, PTAs, and the community. He has led kindergarten orientations, curriculum nights, and parent workshops that strengthen home-school relationships. He holds a Doctorate in Professional Development, has delivered educator training on brain-based instruction and literacy leadership, and is also a published children’s book author. His leadership philosophy centers on the belief that every child deserves to feel safe, supported, and excited to come to school each day. With experience that spans the classroom, the main office, and the central office, Dr. Smalley brings a unique blend of instructional depth, operational strength, and heart to Bretton Woods. His focus remains clear: to ensure every student is known, supported, and inspired to grow.

Thank you,

Chris
