Mr. Mark Kimes
Mark L. Kimes received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Education from Portland State University, Portland, Oregon in 1991 and 1995 respectively.
Mr. Kimes has taught music at every level from Kindergarten through college, and currently conducts the Hauppauge High School Chamber Choir, Concert Choir and Vocal Jazz Ensemble. His choirs have earned numerous Level 6 “Gold with Distinction” awards at the NYSSMA Major Organization festivals over the past eleven years. His groups have competed and won numerous music competitions, performed with the Long Island Philharmonic Chorus, with the Canadian Brass, for the New York Islanders Hockey Team, and Long Island Ducks. Most recently, the Chamber Choir was a featured ensemble at the NYSSMA Winter Conference Concert Hour.
Mr. Kimes serves as the Conductor and Commander of the 42nd Infantry Division Band of the New York Army National Guard, where he distinguished himself by leading his band into a combat zone in January of 2005, performing musical and security missions throughout Iraq, and returning the band home safely in November of 2005. His band was the first reserve component band in the United States to be deployed to a war zone since the Korean War. His Band continues to serve the citizens of New York State with yearly concert tours, military functions and community parades. They have been featured at the Chautauqua Institute, Smith Opera House, the Tilles Center, Lake George, and Saratoga Springs to name a few.
Mr. Kimes has guest conducted many Honor Choirs and Bands throughout New York State. He has presented clinics and workshops in both choral and instrumental conducting in Oregon and on Long Island and was honored to guest conduct the United States Army Field Band in Albany, NY in 2009 and the Army TRADOC Band in Little Creek, VA in 2011. Other guest conducting engagements include SCMEA All County Chorus, HMEA Honor Choir, Northshore Honor Choir Festival, and Wayne County Honor Band.
His military education includes the Warrant Officer Advanced Course, Warrant Officer Basic Course, Warrant Officer Candidate School, Bandmaster Sustainment Course, Action Officer Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course, Primary Leadership Development Course, and Army Band Conductor’s Course. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal , the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (2), the Army Achievement Medal (3), the Reserve Component Achievement Medal, the National Defense Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with ‘M’ Device, the New York State Military Commendation Medal, the New York State Long and Faithful Service Medal, the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross, and the New York State Medal for Merit.
Mr. Kimes’ professional associations include SCMEA, ACDA, NYSSMA, NAfME, USWOA, and NYSBDA. He is happily married to Kelley Nassief, a distinguished classical singer and teacher on Long Island, and is the proud father of twin girls, Lauren and Katherine.
