HHS Seniors Take a Walk Back in Time
Monday, June 11, 2018 was the senior picnic, count down and graduation walk at all three elementary buildings. The Hauppauge High School seniors started the day at 9 am in the high school auditorium where they heard a motivational speaker, enjoyed a student made memory video and signed each other’s yearbooks. The students then boarded three sets of buses to go to their respective elementary buildings where they donned their caps and gowns and walked the halls in a graduation parade for the students and staff.
It was a beautiful day and a wonderful way for the seniors to wrap up their time in the Hauppauge Public Schools (HPS). HPS prides itself in preparing all students for the future in realistic ways which includes taking students to college campuses so a student can set tangible goals for themselves after getting excited by a college that is a right fit. A goal of these trips is to close the “aspiration gap.” In other words, students who do not have a realistic expectation of what college is like will sometimes not aspire to go to college or will harbor aspirations that undersell their capabilities. Students return from the college tours and seek out their guidance counselors to craft a high school curriculum that specifically targets acceptance to the college of their choosing.
The Senior Walks help Hauppauge’s youngest students visualize a successful future for themselves.
