19th Annual International Night
On Thursday April 19th the High School Commons was filled with family friends and foreign visitors in celebration of the 19th Annual International Night at Hauppauge High School (HHS). People purchased tickets for six dollars to sample foods from many different nations and to enjoy various types of entertainment including Mr. Kimes and the HHS Chamber Choir, and a beautiful solo vocal performance by Sree Karthikeyan. For younger children there was face painting and a piñata. Raffle tickets were sold for one dollar. A spectacular array of prizes was up for grabs. See the list of prizes below.
Sixteen visiting students from Germany were on hand to give an authentic international flair to the evening.
The advisors of the HHS language clubs hosted the event. They are Madame Christine Walsh of the French Honor Society, Senora Helen Aigen of the Spanish Honor Society, and Frau Danielle Cardi of the German Honor Society.
Here is what they had to say about the event, “International Night first began as a means to unite the French, German, and Spanish Clubs, but over the past 19 years, it has become much more than we could have ever imagined. Not only does it unite language students, but it unites the entire community. It promotes cultural awareness, acceptance, and understanding by allowing students to prepare ethnic dishes from their own heritage and perform cultural dances or songs.
All of the raffle prizes are either purchased in other countries while we are on our school trips or donated by local businesses. The students begin asking for donations starting in January of each year. When the students have to reach out to community members for help, it teaches them to present themselves in a professional way and they become great ambassadors for our school that help people understand what International Night is really about.
This activity is almost entirely run by students under the guidance of the language club advisors, Madame Walsh, Senora Aigen, and Frau Cardi. Each club member is required to bring in a dish which has some cultural significance to him/her. The names and origin of the food are listed in front of each dish at International Night. Each student is also required to bring in a drink, as well as sell raffle tickets and obtain a donation. Students must also set up, serve, and clean up for the event.
For the past nineteen years, the price has remained constant due to the mass effort of all of our wonderful students. For $6 you can eat foods from all different nations and enjoy various types of entertainment.
Each year, a portion of the proceeds for this event goes to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. Please support us and this worthy cause. You can go to www.CCFA.org for more information about how to help.
The French Club participates every year in the Crohn’s and Colitis Walk. This year it will be held on Sunday, May 6th in Belmont State Park.
The Hauppauge German Club is sponsoring a wonderful charity event on Sunday, May 27 to raise money for Paws of War.”
The L.O.T.E. Department Supervisor, Mr. Tim McCarthy, had this to say about the event, “I am proud of our department’s ability to be flexible and to step up to the plate to do what is right for our students. They keep student interests at the heart of everything we do and are willing to go the extra mile.”
