Jake Silverstein is the New York State Champion Wrestler
After two prior second place finishes, Jake Silverstein returned to the New York State semifinals. This year senior Jake Silverstein can finally call himself a state champion. He beat Christopher Barker of Fairport to win the D-I 160-pound title. Hauppauge High School Wrestler, Luke Smith, wrestled back to take 3rd place at the NYS Wrestling Championships.
The excellent Wrestling program in Hauppauge Schools is run by Varsity Head Coach Chris Messina, Varsity Assistant Coach Michael Messina, Junior Varsity Coach Dominick Messina, 7th and 8th Grade Coaches Matt Lichter and Chris Coward.
When asked to reflect on the season, Head Coach Chris Messina had this to say, “This season we were 11-1 winning the League V Dual Meet Championships along with the League V Individual Wrestling Tournament. From the League V Tournament we qualified 16 wrestlers to the Suffolk County Championships. Five wrestlers made it to the Semi-Finals which was a nice surprise for us. Luke Smith, a sophomore at 99 pounds, won the League five title and placed 2nd in the Suffolk County Tournament. He went on to place third in the New York State Championship Tournament. He avenged his Suffolk County Finals loss in the State Tournament by defeating Thomas Diresta from Kings Park allowing Luke to go for Third and Fourth, which he won. Andrew Maiorini, a 99-pound freshman was the nice surprise getting to the Suffolk County Semi-Finals eventually placing fourth. He placed third in the League Tournament. Senior Tyler Bisono took a year off and came back to win a League V title at 113 pounds. Sophomore Anthony Dibartolo has been wrestling tough all year winning the League title at 120 pounds. He placed third In the Suffolk County Tournament. Sophomore Danny Mauriello was moved up a weight class in the counties due to the fact that we felt it was the best chance he had at a County title. Danny did not disappoint us first by winning the League V title and then in a stunning last 10 second victory, won his first Suffolk County Championship at 145 pounds. Danny is the third Mauriello in Hauppauge history to win a Suffolk County Championship.
Senior Jake Silverstein has added several records to his resume by becoming Hauppauge's first three-time Suffolk County Champion and three-time New York State Place winner. Jake placed second in the states in 2015, broke his finger in the counties in 2016 and placed second in the states again in 2017. So, this was his last shot at becoming Hauppauge's eight New York State Wrestling Champion. He won four matches; a pin in 24 seconds, a 17-0 Tech fall, a 11-0 major decision, and 9-2 in the finals. Only 2 pts were scored on him in the tournament and they were two points that he gave his opponent. This year he was 39-2 and he is number two on Hauppauge's All-Time Most career wins at 226-30. He has been ranked as high as 7th in the country and has accepted a scholarship to the University of Nebraska. Hauppauge qualified three wrestlers for the New York State Tournament with Danny Mauriello not placing. The team placed 10th in the New York State Tournament.
Overall the season was a success with the majority of our wrestlers returning the next few years. The captains of the team were Jake Silverstein and Nick Trentini, both seniors. Nick has been a varsity wrestler for the past four years placing in the leagues the past two years. His leadership on and off the mats provided a perfect mix to be named one of the captains.”
