HHS Celebrates Science Olympians
On Saturday, January 27th, two teams of Hauppauge High School students attended the Eastern Long Island Regional Science Olympiad competition and placed as the 10th place school. Students earned a spot in the top ten for Disease Detectives, Duct Tape Challenge, Forensics, Herpetology, Microbe Mission, Optics, Thermodynamics and Write It Do It. Throughout the day, students competed with partners in each of these competitions. From testing events where students took a test to showcase their knowledge, to hands on laboratory events where students had to test their skills in the lab, the students were able to show their determination and grit.
Some of the highlights of the day were Lexi Leuci and Hamza Syed earning 3rd place in Optics. Lexi and Hamza completed a test, as well as competed in a laser shoot in which they had to place mirrors throughout an area to try and hit a target. Lexi and Hamza also earned 5th place in Thermodynamics where in addition to taking a test they had to build a device that would allow them to predict the final temperature of a liquid placed inside it. Francesca Paduano and Brandon Sandow earned 5th place in Duct Tape Challenge. This challenge required participants to build a device to collect rubber ducks from a swimming pool using duct tape and limited other materials.
Other top honors included Jalaj Metha and Noah Schwartzapfel earning 6th place in Forensics, Francesca Paduano and Xavier Cheng earning 8th place in Write It Do It, Sai Mauagavalasa and Tyler Xu earning 8th place in Herpetology, Owen Kells and Jalaj Metha earning 8th place in Disease Detectives, Rebecca Klayman and Alex Vasilakopoulos earning 9th place in Disease Detectives and Danielle Liu and Alex Vasilakopoulos earning 9th place in Microbe Mission.
The HHS students entered the Olympiad under the guidance of Physics Teacher Dennis Petercsak and Physics and Computer Science Teacher Briana Becker. Ms. Becker said, “We are very proud of all the work our students have put in during our season and we can't wait to see what they will accomplish next year.”Here is a list of the students who received medals at this year’s ELI Regional Science Olympiad Competition.
