  • First Day of School in Hauppauge is a Big Success

The weather was overcast with drops of rain here and there in the early morning as students arrived for their first day of school for the 2017-2018 school year.  The students made their own sunshine with their smiles as they arrived anxiously greeting their friends and entering the five schools of Hauppauge.

The administration and staff of all the schools were out to be sure that the students were personally greeted.  It is no wonder that there were so many smiling faces.  Students are very comfortable entering the schools.  Many feel that their school is like a second home.

Great things will be accomplished thanks to the positive attitudes apparent on the first day of school.

Each building was immaculate as the students entered.  The custodial staff worked hard all summer to get the hallways and classrooms in pristine condition.  The secretarial staff also worked hard all summer to make the opening day smooth and running efficiently.  The grounds crew completed the picture with manicured lawns.  Teachers and administrators were on hand to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere throughout the district.

John Quincy Adams said "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader."

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Dennis O'Hara enthusiastically looks forward to a wonderful school year ahead saying, "Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year!  I am extremely proud to be part of the Hauppauge School District and community.  Our community is composed of caring adults and students with limitless potential.

As the John Quincy Adams quote above explains, leadership is about making a difference for others.  It is about inspiring students, employees and community members to seek out challenges and to find fulfillment.  However, leadership is not the result of a position or title, nor is it a solitary endeavor.  As we aspire to change our students' life trajectories, we will need your help and support.  A strong partnership among the Hauppauge School District, parents and community members is the only way we can be sure our children will experience happiness, success and fulfillment beyond their years in our schools.  I have been inspired by the support of our community and am looking forward with great optimism at what our collective future holds.

As always, we invite you to partner with us by attending concerts, athletic events, dramas, musicals, talent shows, celebrations of achievement and meetings, including those of the Board of Education.  The District calendar is an excellent source of information.  Please be sure to visit our District website at www.hauppauge.k12.ny.us for the most up-to-date information and to register for our Email Blast to receive timely district-wide announcements.  In addition, you can find exciting announcements and inspiring messages on District Facebook and Twitter accounts (@HPS_Eagles & @OHara_HPS).

I look forward to our continued partnership and am excited to see you at many school and community events over the course of the year.  On behalf of the Board of Education, District faculty, staff, and most importantly our students, I welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year and wish you much success and fulfillment."
