    BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
    BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY/PRESENTATION MEETING
     June 16, 2015            

    Recognition and Awards: 

    ·         Long Island Media Arts Show Winners - Stephanie Bacotti, Katie Parrett, Kayla Quinlivan (short film) and Sajak Karki (photography) were recognized for winning “Best in Show” for their submissions to the Long Island Media Arts Show.

    ·         LOTE National Exam Achievements – French/German/Spanish –The following students were recognized for their high achievements on the Languages Other Than English (LOTE) National Exams:  Elodie Sirulnick, Juliette Sirulnick, Mary Festa, Valentina Silva, Andy Charlorin, Samantha Suazo, Matt Kalinsky, Emily Clackett, Alex Bozeat, Nik Fuchs, Michelle Gee, Angela Musco, Elise Zhao, Victoria Bublin, Reah Vasilakopoulos, Nicole Steffens, Sara Drake, Gabrielle Savarino, Christina Walker, Jillian Ortiz, Dana Liuzzo, Michael Harrison, Danielle Gerardi and David Wellisch.

    ·         Long Island Youth Summit Winners – High School students Brittany Lewis and Samantha Weinstein were recognized for winning “Best Video/Art Project” at the Long Island Youth Summit.

    ·         New York State History Day Winners –Students Jack Casey, Emma Casey, Emma Claps, Ryan DiSilvio, Jade Carvalho, Elise Zhao, Christine Cuzzi, and Larissa McCumiskey were recognized for their accomplishments in the New York State History Competition Day.

    ·         Long Island Math Fair –Eighth-grader Danielle Gerardi was recognized for her achievements at the Long Island Math Fair.

    ·         Long Island Scholar-Artist –High School senior Billy Recce was recognized for being named a Newsday Long Island Scholar-Artist.

    ·         Long Island Council for Social Studies Harry C. Charles Outstanding Social Studies Supervisor Award –Director of Social Studies and Business Doreen Gordon was recognized as winner of this award. She was nominated and recommended by her colleagues and administrators.

    ·         Retiring Trustees of the Board of Education –Board of Education Trustees Ms. Ann Macaluso and Mrs. Eileen Mass were offered gratitude and well wishes for their many years of service to the students of the Hauppauge School District. 

    ·         Retiring Audit Committee Member –Mr. Keith Sumwalt was recognized for his service as a member of the Audi Committee for the past three years.  

    ·         Staff Retirements – Several retiring District employees were recognized for their many years of service to the Hauppauge School District.  They were Dorothy Baebler, Rosemarie Caravana, Jose Centano, Marie Dacey, Gerard Degen, Brenda DePetris, Milo Every, Kathleen Hill, Andrew Parrucci, Jr., Leonard Postillo, Louise Scala, and Carlene Shernowitz.

    Presentations:

    ·         Annual School District Report Card:   Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Technology Glen Eschbach presented the summary of the annual District report card.   Click here for presentation.

    ·         Code of Conduct Public Hearing:   Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Administration Joseph Tasman presented a summary of the amendments to the Code of Conduct.  Click here for revisions. The Board will adopt the revised Code of Conduct at the annual organizational meeting on July 7, 2015. 

    Business Matters:

    ·         Administrative Matters:  No action.

    ·         Personnel Matters:  The Board accepted the Personnel Action Report dated June 16, 2015.

    ·         Financial Reports:  The Board received the monthly financial reports and approved the contracts included in the agenda.

    ·         Curriculum and Instructional Matters:  The Board approved the recommendations of the Committee on Special Education and an overnight field trip.

    ·         Policies:  The Board approved amendments to the following District policies: 

    §4326 Limited English Proficiency Instruction

    §5150 School Admissions

    §5280 Interscholastic Athletics

    §5460 Child Abuse, Maltreatment or Neglect in a Domestic Setting

    §8520 Free and Reduced Price Food Services

    §9230 Professional Staff Recruiting and Hiring

    The Board accepted amendments to the following policy regulations: 

    §2342-R Agenda Preparation and Dissemination

    §5152.1-R  Admission of Non-Resident Students

    Library Bond Certification:
    The Board certified the results of the Hauppauge Public Library Bond Referendum of June 9, 2015. 

    New Business:
    The Board offered gratitude and well wishes to Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Technology Glen Eschbach and District Clerk Celeste Kerimian, as they pursue their career paths beyond Hauppauge Schools.

    The next Board of Education meeting will be the annual Organizational Meeting on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. in the James Baxter Board Room at Whiporwil School.
     
     

    BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
    BUSINESS MEETING
    June 2, 2015  

    ·         Presentations

    Tenure Recommendations:  Members of the administrative staff endorsed the recommendations for tenure of the following staff members and spoke of their contributions to the District:   

    o         Mr. Glen Eschbach, Ms. Kristen Reingold, Mr. George Gagliardi, Dr. Donald Murphy, Mr. Michael Gavalas, Ms. Danielle Cardi, Ms. Lindsay Conaghan, Ms. Kerry Malone, Ms. Cyna Buckley, Ms. Carrie Pecoraro, and Ms. Dawn Lovejoy. 

                The Board approved the tenure recommendations. 

    ·         Administrative Matters:  All administrative matters were approved by the Board including the acceptance of two exchange students for fall 2015. 

    ·         Personnel Matters:  The Board accepted the Personnel Action Report dated June 2, 2015.

    ·         Business Matters The Board received the monthly financial reports and approved the contracts recorded on the agenda. The Board also accepted an $8,000 donation from Hauppauge Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA) to be allocated evenly to the Fine and Performing Arts Department and to the Athletic Department. 

    ·         Curriculum and Instructional Matters:  The Board approved the recommendations of the Committee on Special Education, an overnight field trip, and the following new courses:  AP Calculus BC, Exploring Mathematics with Computers and Robotics II-Grade 7, and Advanced Programming and Robotics III-Grade 8.

    ·         Policies:  The Board approved the amendments to policy regulation 5410-R Concussion Management. 

    ·         Committee Reports:  No action

    BUDGET HEARING & BUSINESS MEETING
    May 5, 2015 

    ·         Presentations:  Proposed Budget Hearing:  Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations James Stucchio reviewed the proposed 2015-2016 school budget highlights.  Community members were able to ask related questions.  Click here for presentation.

    ·         Administrative Matters:  All administrative matters were approved by the Board, including the Memorandum of Agreement with the Hauppauge Schools Office Staff Association. 

    ·         Personnel Matters:  The Board accepted the Personnel Action Report dated May 5, 2015.

    ·         Business Matters The Board received the monthly financial reports, approved the Audit Committee’s recommendations and approved the contracts included in the agenda.

    ·         Curriculum and Instructional Matters:  The Board approved the recommendations of the Committee on Special Education.

    ·         Policies:  The Board approved the amendments to policy regulation 5421-R Use of Epinephrine Auto-Injector Devices (Epi-Pens) in the School Setting.

    ·         Committee Reports

    o   The Board approved the formation of the Architect Interview Committee.

    o   Code of Conduct Committee:  The committee noted upcoming changes to the District’s Code of Conduct with regard to e-cigarettes and powdered alcohol.

    ·         New BusinessThe Superintendent provided the community with updates regarding the number of students who opted out of state tests; the State’s position on the impact of districts opting out of field testing; and possible new legislation regarding the teacher evaluation system.

    ·         Next Meeting:  The next Board of Education meeting will be the Annual Meeting held immediately following the School District Budget Vote and Board Member Election on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at 10:00 p.m. in the James Baxter Board Room at Whiporwil School. The budget vote and election will take place from 6:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. in the James Baxter Board Room at Whiporwil School.

    BUDGET ADOPTION/BUSINESS/COMMUNITY AND PRESENTATION MEETING
     April 14, 2015

    Recognition and Awards: 

    ·         DECA State Winners: HHS students Brian Logan, Matthew Choy, Jackson Wahl, Bryan Gioia, and Michael Bertolini were recognized for their achievement in the DECA business competition.

    ·         LI’s Best Young Artist Winner:  HHS student Megan Overton was recognized for being awarded with the Renzo S. Bianchi Scholarship.

    Presentations:

    ·         Proposed Budget Overview:  Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations James Stucchio present highlights and state aid information from the proposed 2015-2016 school budget. Click here for presentation.

    Business Matters:

    ·         Administrative Matters:  All administrative matters were approved by the Board, including the calendar of Board of Education meeting dates for 2015-2016.  See attached calendar.·         Personnel Matters:  The Board accepted the Personnel Action Report dated April 14, 2015.

    ·         Financial Reports:  The Board received the monthly financial reports and approved the contracts included in the agenda.

    ·         Curriculum and Instructional Matters:  The Board approved three overnight field trips and the recommendations of the Committee on Special Education.

    ·         Policies:  No action.

    Budget Adoption: 
    The Board approved the adoption of the proposed 2015-2016 school district budget.  The proposed budget reflects a budget to budget increase of 0.91% over the current budget and is within the calculated tax levy limit of 0.24%.

    School Property Tax Report Card – The Board approved the adoption of the 2015-2016 School Property Tax Report Card.
     
    New Business:  The Board approved a motion to seek a Request For Proposal (RFP) concerning computer services.

    BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
    SPECIAL MEETING
     March 31, 2015    

     

     The Board approved the following resolution to be added to the budget vote on May 19, 2015:

     RESOLVED, that the Board of Education of the Hauppauge Union Free School District is hereby authorized to undertake capital projects for the construction of an artificial turf field at Hauppauge High School and for the removal and replacement of vinyl asbestos tile at Hauppauge High School all at a cost not to exceed $1,700,000.00 which the Board is authorized to expend from the District’s unrestricted fund balance as exists as of June 30, 2015.

    BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
    BUDGET, PRESENTATION AND COMMUNITY INPUT MEETING
     March 24, 2015             

     

    Recognition and Awards:  

    ·         Winter Track Bronze Medalists – Members of the Varsity Girls Winter Track Relay Team – Casey Cummo, Jasmine Davis, Shannon Downey and Nicole Scudero - were recognized for their bronze medal achievement at the 108th Millrose Games.  This was the first time a Hauppauge team had ever qualified for the games.

    ·         All-State Runner – Jasmine Davis was also recognized for her achievement of 6th place in the state’s 600 meter run.

    ·         Wrestling Coach Chris Messina – was recognized for achieving the most career wins by a wrestling coach in Suffolk County history. Coach Messina also was selected by Newsday as “Wrestling Coach of the Year.”

    ·         Wrestling Team County Champions – the Varsity Wrestling Team was recognized for their achievements as League IV and Suffolk County Champions.

    ·         Varsity Cheer Team – was recognized as LICCA Long Island Champions and for their 2nd place achievement at the UCA National Championship.

    ·         Long Island Science and Engineering Fair – Luke Farrell and Sarah Jacobs were recognized for their achievement of 2nd place in the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair. Sai Karan Uppugalla was recognized for receiving Honorable Mention.

    ·         American Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese Design-A-Card Art Contest – Students Umut Baran Kahyaoglu and Dana Liuzzo were recognized for achieving 7th place and 9th place, respectively.

    Presentation:  Glen Eschbach, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Technology presented the Instruction portion of the 2015/2016 proposed budget.  James Stucchio, Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations presented the Transportation, Undistributed and Capital portions of the 2015/2016 proposed budget. Click here to view the presentations.

             Discussion Matters: 

    ·         Athletic Fields:  The Board discussed the possibility of converting the high school athletic field and practice field to artificial turf.

    ·         Board Advocacy Letter to the Community:  The Board approved a letter addressed to the community detailing the advocacy efforts made by the Board and Superintendent.  Click to view the letter.

    ·         Videotaping of Meetings: The Board discussed formulating a policy to videotape Board meetings.

    ·         Superintendent’s Statement:  The Superintendent offered a counter narrative to statements made by the Board President at the March 17th meeting about the relationship between her salary and test scores.   The Superintendent noted that previous Boards established goals that did not focus on test score results, but on increasing opportunities for students and student access to the District’s most rigorous programs.

     March 17, 2015               

     

    ·         Presentation: 2015/16 Proposed Budget:  Revenue, Taxes, Tax Cap, General Support, Employee Benefits and Community Services:  Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations James Stucchio presented the overview of the 2015/2016 aforementioned budget items. Presentation: General Support, Employee Benefits and Presentation: Revenue Budget, NYS Tax Levy Limit

    ·         Administrative Matters:  All administrative matters were approved by the Board. 

    ·         Personnel Matters:  The Board accepted the Personnel Action Report dated March 17, 2015. 

    ·         Business Matters:  The Board received the monthly financial reports and approved the contracts included in the agenda. 

    ·         Curriculum and Instructional Matters:  The Board approved the recommendations of the Committee on Special Education and the disposal of obsolete textbooks. 

    ·         Policies:  No action was taken. 

    ·         Alliance to Save Public Education:  Upon recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools, the Board approved a motion for the Board President to sign the Alliance to Save Public Education letter on behalf of the Board.  The letter is designed to be delivered to state legislators urging them to refrain from enacting Governor Cuomo’s proposals for education reform without meaningful debate and discussion.  Click to view the letter.

     February 24, 2015                 

    ·         Presentation: Budget Overview 2015/2016:  Superintendent of Schools Patricia Sullivan-Kriss and Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations James Stucchio presented the overview of the 2015/2016 school budget. Click here to view the presentation. 

    ·         Administrative Matters:  The Board failed to pass an amendment to the January 18, 2011 contract with the Superintendent of Schools for a one-year extension of her employment through June 2017 school year.   All other administrative matters were approved by the Board. 

    ·         Personnel Matters:  The Board accepted the Personnel Action Report dated February 24, 2015.

    ·         Business Matters:  The Board received the monthly financial reports and approved the contracts included in the agenda. 

    ·         Curriculum and Instructional Matters:  The Board approved overnight field trips and the recommendations of the Committee on Special Education. 

    ·         Policies:  No action was taken. 

    ·         Letter to Governor Cuomo:  Upon recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools, the Board approved a motion to send NYS Governor Cuomo a proclamation indicating that the Board demands the Governor to decouple his funding of public schools with requests for educational policy reform. Click to view the proclamation.

    February 10, 2015

     Recognitions and Awards: 

    ·    Board of Education Achievement Awards: Dr. Crafa and Mr. Kiley received Level 1 Achievement Awards and Mrs. Macaluso received the Level 3 Mastery Award from NY State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) for their achievements in professional development as Board Members.
     
    ·    All-State Student-Athletes:  HHS students Brenna Conover and Katie Murphy were recognized for their outstanding achievements in soccer and cross country, respectively.
     
    ·    Business Leadership Competition: HHS Business students were recognized for their outstanding achievements at the 12th Annual Business Leadership Competition:
    o   Olivia Sebade – 1st Place for Job Interview
    o   Catherine Federico – 2nd Place for Job Interview Life Skills
    o   Marissa Ciminera and Braelyn Demitrieos – 2nd Place for Retail Marketing Team
    o   Mark Bacco – Honorable Mention for Job Interview Life Skills

    Presentations:  

    Languages Other Than English (LOTE)/Foreign Language in Elementary Schools (FLES)
    :  Director of LOTE Lillian Carey presented an overview of Hauppauge’s LOTE/FLES programs. FLES Teacher Ms. Campagnoli and 5th grade students from Bretton Woods provided an interactive demonstration of a FLES classroom lesson. Click here to view Ms. Carey’s presentation.

    •   Administrative Matters:  All administrative matters were approved by the Board
    • Personnel Matters:  The Board accepted the Personnel Action Report dated February 10, 2015
    •   Business Matters:  The Board received the monthly financial reports and approved the contracts included in the agenda. The Board approved a budget revision to increase revenue line “Other State Aid” by $100,000 and increase expenditure line “Building Repair HS Special Legislative Grant” by $100,000. These funds will be used to construct a Cosmetology classroom at the high school.
    •  Curriculum and Instructional Matters:  The Board approved new textbooks for French classes in grades 6-10; overnight field trips; and the recommendations of the Committee on Special Education
    • Policies:  The Board approved revisions to the following policies:
      • 5100 – Student Attendance
      •  5152 – Admission of Non-Resident Students
      • 5152.1 – Admission of Foreign Students
      • 5410 – Concussion Management
      •  5421 – Administering Epinephrine in Emergency Situations

     JANUARY 13, 2015   

     

    • Recognitions and Awards: 
      •   VFW Voice of Democracy Essay Competition: HHS Senior Daniel S. Smith was recognized for being the first-place winner of the annual essay competition. His essay advances to the county level of this national competition.

      • NafME All-Eastern Honors Chorus:  HHS Senior Laurel Albinder was recognized for being selected to participate in the All-Eastern Honors Choir, which will take place in Rhode Island in April.

     

    • Presentations:
      • Maintaining Programs for Students in an Era of Fiscal Constraints:  Superintendent of Schools Patricia Sullivan-Kriss; Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations James Stucchio; Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Technology Glen Eschbach; and Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Administration Joseph Tasman presented to the Board and community a variety of options for consideration in the long-range financial planning for the District. Click here to view presentationMrs. Kriss recommended that the Board of Education consider transportation options for inclusion in the proposed 2015/16 school district budget; she recommended the establishment of a committee to further explore the organizational options for possible inclusion in the 2016/17 budget.  The Board established a sub-committee to decide how to move forward with the options presented in the report.

    Personnel Matters:  The Board accepted the revised Personnel Action Report dated December 9, 2014.

    Business Matters:  The Board received the monthly financial reports and approved the contracts included in the agenda. 

    Curriculum and Instructional Matters:  The Board approved three new high school courses (English 12, IB Business Management and Cosmetology); the Architecture Residential Drafting and Design textbook; overnight field trips and the recommendations of the Committee on Special Education.

     Policies:  The Board approved revisions to the following policy:

    New Business: Facilities Report – The Board will schedule a special meeting in January to review the items included in the Facilities Report presented at the October 21, 2014 Board of Education meeting.

    Administrative Matters:  The Board approved several administrative matters included the following:

    •  Authorization for Board of Education Attorney Warren H. Richmond to appear before the Islip Town Board on November 20, 2014 to speak in opposition to the application of Wind Watch Tower, LLC and to present the report prepared for the District by HR&A Advisors, Inc.

    Personnel Matters:  The Board accepted the Personnel Action Report dated November 18, 2014.

    Business Matters:  The Board received the monthly financial reports and approved the contracts included in the agenda. 

    Curriculum and Instructional Matters The Board approved overnight field trips and the recommendations of the Committee on Special Education.

    Independent Auditor’s Reports:  The Board received the Independent Auditor’s Reports as recommended by the Audit Committee.  The auditing firm of R.S. Abrams presented the Board with the financial review of Hauppauge School District for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014.  Click here to view report.

     OCTOBER 21, 2014
     
    Presentations and Community Input Meeting Format:  The Board of Education has initiated a new format for meetings.  Meetings will be classified as Business Meetings or Presentations/Community Input Meetings.
    • Recognition and Awards: 
      • Board Recognition Week:  Each year members of the Board of Education are recognized for their dedication and contribution to the Hauppauge School District.  In their honor, the Hauppauge High School Chamber Choir performed vocal selections. Superintendent of Schools Patricia Sullivan-Kriss expressed gratitude to the Board by funding the “Board of Education Social Leadership Scholarship” in their honor.  The award is given annually to two high school students who demonstrate social leadership qualities.

      • Class of 2015 Top 10 Students:  The following HHS seniors were recognized for their outstanding academic achievements:  Emily Linko, Valedictorian; Luke Farrell, Salutatorian; Daniel Nasta, 3rd; Stephen Kim, 4th; Jacqueline Michels, 5th; Sean McCabe, 6th; David Pokryvailo, 7th; Esther Kim, 8th; Natalie Cordoves, 9th; and Emmanuel Bazan-Bergamino, 10th.

      •  National Merit Commended Students: Several high school students were named National Merit Commended Students.  They are Jonathan Castro, Luke Farrell, Sricharan Gumudavelli, Emily Linko, Nadia Moumine and Leland Reisfield.

      • 2015 National Achievement Program Outstanding Participant: HHS Senior Edwin McCray was recognized as an Outstanding Participant in the 2015 National Achievement Program

      • Mildred E. Smith Historical Essay Competition Winner:  HHS Senior Emily Linko was recognized as the 2014 winner of the Smithtown Historical Society’s essay competition. This is the fifth consecutive year a Hauppauge High School student has been awarded this honor
    • Presentations:
      • Facilities Committee:  Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations James Stucchio presented the Facilities Committee’s report outlining the needs of the District’s buildings and grounds.

      •  Social and Emotional Literacy: Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Technology Glen Eschbach presented an overview of the Social Emotional Literacy (SEL) programs currently in place and offered recommendations for future programs.  These presentations can be viewed on the school district website.

    BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
    BUSINESS MEETING
     OCTOBER 7, 2014 

    •  Business Meeting Format:  The Board of Education has initiated a new format for meetings.  Meetings will be classified as Business Meetings or Presentations/Community Input Meetings.  
    • 2014/15 Tax Levy Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations James Stucchio presented the 2014/15 tax levy.  The Board adopted the resolutions for the 2014/15 tax levy and the Dual Tax Rate for the 2014/15 school year.
    • National Merit Commended Students: Several high school students were named National Merit Commended Students.  They are Jonathan Castro, Luke Farrell, Sricharan Gumudavelli, Emily Linko, Nadia Moumine and Leland Reisfield.  Edwin McCray was named an Outstanding Participant in the 2015 National Achievement Program. 
    • Hauppauge Public Library Bond Referendum Vote:  The results of the vote were accepted. The referendum failed to pass.

    BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
    REGULAR MEETING
     SEPTEMBER 16, 2014                

    ·         Community University:  Hauppauge School District will present a series of workshops called Community University, which are designed to support parents in addressing the social and emotional issues facing children today.  A flyer will be mailed to residents in the coming weeks detailing the workshops. 

    ·         National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists were recently announced and three Hauppauge High seniors, Matthew Fortmeyer, Stephen Kim and Daniel Nasta, were named semifinalists.  They will compete to advance to National Merit Finalists and then to National Merit Winners in the spring. 

    ·         Advocacy:  Superintendent of Schools Patricia Sullivan-Kriss and other area school superintendents formally met with Congressman Steve Israel in a joint effort to promote solutions to the over-testing of students.  Several recommendations to the No Child Left Behind law will be championed by Congressman Israel; the superintendents will work to engage members of Congress to understand and support these recommendations. 

    ·         STEM Education: Director of Mathematics and Information Systems Dr. Donald Murphy has introduced the new Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) course to sixth grade students.  The course is engaging students in the use of computers and robotics. 

    ·         Middle School Cheerleading:  The Board approved Middle School cheerleading athletes to be eligible for selection classification to the junior varsity cheerleading level for one year.  This is a result of changes to cheerleading by the NYS Education Department. 

    ·         Capital Reserve Fund:  The Board approved the recommendation from the Superintendent to transfer remaining unused monies from the 2013/2014 school year to the Capital Reserve Fund. 

    ·         Foreign Exchange Student:  The District welcomed Javier Castello Campos, an exchange student from Spain, for the 2014/2015 school year.

    BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
    REGULAR MEETING
     AUGUST 26, 2014                

    ·         Hauppauge Facilities Inspections:  Members of the Board of Education conducted the required annual facilities inspections on August 26th to ensure that the buildings are ready for staff and students for the coming school year.  Members of the grounds and maintenance crew were thanked for their diligence in preparing and improving the buildings. 

    ·         Class Sizes:  After careful review, Superintendent of Schools Patricia Sullivan-Kriss informed the Board that five teachers at the elementary school level will be used to address class size. For this year only, elementary school class sizes will return to levels similar to the sizes that existed prior to 2008.  The Superintendent informed the Board that this will allow time for a thorough review of the issue for future staffing. 

    ·         Retirement:  Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Administration Michele Rothfeld was thanked for her dedication and devoted service to the children of the Hauppauge School District as she retires at the end of this month.

    SPECIAL MEETING
     AUGUST 18, 2014 

     

    ·         Hauppauge High School Roof Replacement:  The Board of Education called a special meeting to address recent damage to the High School roof caused by the significant rainfall on August 13, 2014.  The damage to the roof has been determined by the District’s Architect to present health and safety concerns, which require immediate replacement of the roof in the affected areas.  The Board approved the emergency repair work and the expenditure of funds for the necessary repairs.

    ·         Construction Projects:  Summer repair work to District buildings and grounds continues to progress.  Projects include:  Repair and repaving of parking lots including curbs and sidewalks; asbestos abatement and replacement of classroom floor tiles; installation of unit ventilators and associated casework at Forest Brook and Pines; installation of access-control doors at all elementary schools and Whiporwil; reconstruction of two science labs and the science resource room at the High School; and replacement of windows at Whiporwil. 

    ·         Class Sizes:  Superintendent of Schools Patricia Sullivan-Kriss will carefully monitor student enrollment throughout the coming weeks and evaluate the need to add additional sections in the elementary grades. 

    ·         Director of Fine & Performing Arts:  Ms. Laura Stiegelmaier was welcomed as the new Director of Fine and Performing Arts.  

    ·         IB (International Baccalaureate) Update:  Participation in IB classes has grown to 40% all 11th and 12th grade students.

    BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
    ORGANIZATIONAL and REGULAR MEETING
     JULY 8, 2014

     

     

    •  The annual Organizational Meeting of the Board of Education allows for the School Board to take action on items pertaining to the operation of the schools for the 2014/15 school year.
    • Election of Officers:  The Board of Education elected David Barshay to serve as President and Gary Fortmeyer to serve as Vice President for the 2014/2015 school year.
    •  Superintendent of Schools Patricia Sullivan-Kriss and the members of the Board welcomed new Trustee Dr. Lawrence Crafa.  Dr. Crafa’s term extends to June 30, 2017.
    • Mr. Joseph Tasman was welcomed as the new Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Administration effective July 1, 2014. 
    • The Superintendent of Schools congratulated the High School Class of 2014 as well as all the students who celebrated Moving Up and Stepping Up.  Ninety-seven percent of our High School graduates intend to pursue post-graduate studies. 
    • Dr. Donald Murphy, Director of Mathematics and Information Systems, has been selected to present at the Long Island Technology and Education Summit in October on the Common Core tutorial videos he recently co-developed.  Dr. Murphy’s work with the Common Core tutorial support videos known as “ccvid” has also earned the attention of the NYS Commissioner of Education; Dr. Murphy has been asked to present a prototype of the videos to technical support teams across New York State at a conference in Albany this month.
    • The following High School spring sports teams were recognized by Section XI for their sportsmanship:  Boys JV Lacrosse, Boys Varsity Tennis and Girls Varsity Track.
