HONORS FRENCH OR GERMAN 11 Credit – Level IV
This beginning language course is designed for students who have an interest in learning other languages and are currently enrolled in another language sequence. Because students have already acquired the skills needed to learn a second language, this course will move quickly through Checkpoint A of the NYS syllabus. In this course, students will develop listening and speaking skills that will enable them to understand simple spoken French or German and engage in conversations in which they may talk about themselves, persuade someone to take a course of action, provide information or seek information about a variety of everyday topics. Reading skills at this level involves the interpretation of a variety of basic authentic materials (advertisements, tickets) and simple narratives. In writing, students learn to meet the purpose of a task (e.g., to provide or seek information) with appropriate vocabulary and structure at a reasonable length. In addition, students acquire understanding and develop an appreciation of cultures other than their own. This course meets the NYS standards in LOTE for Communication and Culture at the Checkpoint B level.
SPANISH 1
1 Credit - Level III
In Spanish 1 students complete Checkpoint A of the NYS syllabus in order to meet the initial graduation requirement of one LOTE credit. This credit can be earned as of grade 9 by passing the course. In addition, students are given the FLACS Checkpoint A Examination in June as an opportunity to earn the required LOTE credit. In Spanish 1 students begin to develop listening and speaking skills that will enable them to understand simple spoken Spanish and engage in conversations in which they may talk about themselves, persuade someone to take a course of action, provide information or seek information about a variety of everyday topics. Spanish 1B is for students who have a background in Spanish but have not yet completed Checkpoint A and/or earned the required one LOTE credit. It meets the needs of students who do not need to take the complete Spanish 1 course but rather need to concentrate on the second half of Spanish 1. For a course description, see Spanish 1. 1 Credit - Level III
In French 2, German 2 and Spanish 2 students begin Checkpoint B, which ends with the FLACS Checkpoint B Examination. Students will increase their listening and speaking skills through conversational topics that require more detail. Students’ reading skills will be strengthened through ‘reading for meaning’ and thematic selections. Student writing will become more task oriented and will require organization, structure and a broader range of vocabulary. Students will broaden their understanding and appreciation of cultures other than their own. These courses meet the NYS standards for Communication and Culture at the Checkpoint B level. 1 Credit - Level III
In French 3, German 3 and Spanish 3 students complete Checkpoint B. The FLACS Checkpoint B Examination is the final examination and completes the LOTE Regents sequence. Students will continue to increase their listening and speaking skills through conversational topics that require more detail. Students’ reading skills will continue to grow through more extensive ‘reading for meaning’ and thematic selections. Student writing will continue to meet the requirements of the writing rubrics in meeting the purpose of the task, organization, structure, range of vocabulary and length. Students will continue to broaden their understanding and appreciation of cultures other than their own. These courses meet the NYS standards for Communication and Culture at the Checkpoint B level. 1 Credit - Level IVIn French 3H, German 3H and Spanish 3H students complete Checkpoint B. The FLACS Checkpoint B Examination is the final examination and completes the Regents sequence. Students are selected for French 3H, German 3H and Spanish 3H on the recommendation of their respective LOTE teacher. Advanced skills are necessary to succeed in this class, as the content is studied on a more intensive level than in French 3, German 3 and Spanish 3. French 3H, German 3H and Spanish 3H will meet the needs and accommodate the abilities of honors-level students in an accelerated and enriched manner. Students will receive the necessary level of preparation required to help them meet with success in their post-Regents and pre-Advanced Placement language courses. 1 Credit - Level IV
At this level, students continue to increase skill and confidence in speaking and understanding French, German and Spanish. Reading and discussion of a variety of literary forms (e.g., short stories, magazines, newspaper articles) and creative writing projects (e.g., producing a class newspaper or children’s storybooks), will expand students’ acquisition and use of language. Language instruction in the context of current and past cultural perspectives will enhance students’ ongoing awareness and appreciation of the French, German and Spanish-speaking worlds. This level is recommended for those students who plan to go to college and/or plan to take the Advanced Placement examination as seniors. Activities and materials are designed to provide students with the first of a two-year college level program that may, but does not need to, culminate in the Advanced Placement examination. 1 credit - Level VI
This course serves as the first year of the two-year IB Language B SL course. Students will be expected to develop fluency in writing, speaking, and understanding in a range of situations and contexts. Both oral and written communication skills will be highly emphasized at this level through increased reading, writing, and discussions with a focus on themes, including adolescence, communication and media, health, global issues, and customs and traditions to develo the students' language skills. Additionally, students should be able to demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the different cultural perspectives where the language is spoken. These themes will be explored through the use of videos, literary pieces as well as current magazines, websites, and newspapers. Prerequisite: French, German, or Spanish 3 or 3 Honors. Recommended criteria: Teacher recommendation and excellent ability in all four language skills.FRENCH 4H, GERMAN 4H, SPANISH 4H
1 Credit - Level IV
Level 4H in French, German and Spanish stresses the importance of communication, grammar and literature. Students are selected for French 4H, German 4H and Spanish 4H on the recommendation of their respective LOTE teachers. Advanced skills are required for success in all 4H classes, since instruction is conducted mostly in the language studied. Students in 4H courses are expected to develop the ability to understand the spoken language, knowledge of advanced grammar, and a well-developed vocabulary that will allow them to comprehend newspaper and magazine articles, literary texts and non-technical writings.

1 Credit - Level V
This advanced-level course offers students the opportunity to further enhance their language skills with a focus on speaking and writing. In this course students will explore various media such as newspaper articles, literary selections and films. Students will be involved in guided research on a specific cultural project. These students are not required to take the AP exam.ADVANCED PLACEMENT FRENCH, GERMAN, SPANISH
l Credit - Level VI
This course prepares students to take the AP examination. Students will have the opportunity to develop the following: (a) the ability to understand the spoken language in various contexts and media, such as radio, opera, theater and film, (b) a knowledge and mastery of advanced grammatical concepts and idiomatic expressions, (c) a vocabulary sufficient for reading newspaper and magazine articles, literary and cultural texts and nontechnical writings without dependence on a dictionary, and (d) the ability to meet Advanced Placement expectations with reasonable fluency and accuracy in oral and written expression of language albeit on cassette or in coherent, resourceful writing. Extensive practice in creative writing of essays, extemporaneous speaking on intricate topics and a thorough review of grammar are part of the course. Prerequisite: French 4, German 4, Spanish 4 honors and teacher recommendation. Students must have outstanding ability in all four language skills – listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
