All students should have the following supplies:
- A French/English dictionary (LaRousse or Harap are usually very good . Do not buy the mini dictionaries because they are usually not very accurate.)
IB1 and 2 would benefit from a French/French dictionary, but it is not mandatory and could be kept at home.
- a three ring binder used solely for French (no spiral notebooks may be used because your notes and handouts should be in order)
- a three hole puncher that fits in the binder (helpful, but not mandatory)
- pens (any color except red)
- index cards to use for vocabulary flashcards (helpful when studying vocabulary words and verbs, but not mandatory)IB themes:
1. Social Relationships* (educational system, relationships, friendship, work, family, social and/or political structures…)
2. Communication and Media* (advertising, internet, radio and television, censorship, bias in the media…)
3. Global Issues* (global warming, poverty and famine, racism, prejudice, discrimination…)
4. Health and well being (concepts of beauty, diet and nutrition, drug abuse…)
5. Customs and Traditions. (food, historical events, celebrations, the arts…)

You will be asked to complete a chart for each picture throughout the school year in preparation for the IB assessments. As you look for your pictures, think about the following:
What do you see in the image? (Give details.)
What topic does this connect to?
(IB topics)What message does the image convey? Connect with what you see in the image.
Think about how this image connects with the culture. Reflect on the topic.
There is a FREE app available for smart phones called Duo lingo. I highly recommend this app for all levels. It is excellent practice.
Consider putting your cell phone or Facebook in French. It helps you learn valuable vocabulary words.
The following website is excellent for French and world news. It is entirely in French and can be a bit difficult to understand at first because of the speed at which they speak, BUT... I HIGHLY recommend this for ALL French students. When you are unfamiliar with one of the topics, it may help to do a quick google search. The more background knowledge you have, the easier the French will be.)The upper level classes should listen to the news at least 3x per week!http://www.tv5.org/ (French news website which also has different links and activities)
The following link takes you directly to the news broadcasts that we watch in class. Save it!http://www.tv5monde.com/cms/chaine-francophone/info/p-1909-L-actualite-en-video.htm?jt=jt_monde
FOR ALL STUDENTS: Your study of French NEEDS to continue outside of the classroom. It is STRONGLY suggested that you watch one movie in French per month at home. You may choose any movie you would like. Just make sure the DVD has the option to put the film in French. It is best to watch the movie in French with French subtitles if possible.
