    OUR HISTORY

Welcome to the Hauppauge High School Writing Center!  The Writing Center was created in 2012 by Dr. Timothy Horan (Library Media Specialist, and Director of the Writing Center).  Dr. Horan is a former teacher of high school English.  Prior to that he was the Supervisor of the Writing Center at St. John's University, in Queens, NY (a writing center which he also helped establish).

    WE ARE UNIQUE AND ORIGINAL

We are a "School Library Writing Center."  This is an original concept created and developed by Dr. Horan, and there is no other writing center like us in the world.  As the originator and expert on this new model, Dr. Horan has spoken on this topic at state and national levels, and has also been nationally published on it.

    WHAT DO WE DO?

From thesis statements through final editing, we provide assistance with all phases of the writing process.  Along the way, we'll help you with organization, development of ideas, research, and revising...and anything else you (and your writing) might require.  Our ultimate goal is not to assist with individual papers, but to develop your skills as an independent writer.

    WRITING CENTER TUTORS

All of our tutors are high-achieving students here at Hauppauge High School.  Carefully selected and then individually trained to conduct one-on-one writer's conferences, they are highly skilled in the writing process, and are available to help you with all of your academic projects.  Dr. Horan is also a tutor, and you can work with him if you want.

    HOW DOES IT WORK?

Your journey in the Writing Center begins by making an appointment (in the library).  Next, students typically bring an assignment or project they're working on.  All instruction is conducted by peers, in the format of the one-on-one writer's conference.  This means that you (and your work) will have the focused attention of a highly competent tutor who has been trained in writing, as well as this type of instruction.  Multiple sessions over a few days work best.  Your tutor will guide you through successive drafts and revisions, and you'll be surprised at how quickly your writing skills will improve.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Is this helpful? YES!  Your academic skills and knowledge of writing will definitely improve.

    Is this Free? YES!

Who can come to the Writing Center? ANY student at Hauppauge High School.

Who will be helping me?  Your tutor will be another student at Hauppauge High School.

Where do I sign up for an appointment?  In the Library.

Where do the sessions take place?  In the Library.

What subjects do you cover?  All of them.

When can I come to the Writing Center?  During the day on your free period, lunch period, and (with a pass) from Academic Resource Center.  We're also open after school (until 3pm).

Can you guarantee me a higher grade on my project?  NO.  While visits to the Writing Center usually result in higher scores, your grade remains a transaction that is exclusively between you and your teacher.

Can I drop my paper off for final editing, and then pick it up later?  NO.  While this may improve your paper, it will not help you to become a better writer.

Can I make an appointment for some final editing?  NO.  While this may improve your paper, it will not help you to become a better writer.

But earlier you said you'd help with final editing, didn't you? Yes.  We'll assist with final editing when we assist with the paper from early stages through its evolution.  Editing is not an end in itself; it's a part of an overall cycle.  Remember, our goal is not to improve your paper, but to improve you as a writer.

I do my own creative writing.  Can I have a tutor look at that, and critique it?  YES.  Although we exist primarily to assist with your development as an academic writer, we can also assist with your own personal writing.  Remember, our highest goal is to help you develop as an independent writer.  Experience in multiple formats will certainly assist in this process.
