About Languages Other Than English

"The limits of my language mean the limits of my world"
Ludwig Wittgenstein

Knowledge of more than one language bridges cultural barriers and opens up a world of social and economic opportunities. Recognizing the need to prepare students for success in this increasingly inter-connected and shrinking world and the importance of second language proficiency in creating effective and successful global citizens, Hauppauge Public Schools has initiated a Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools (FLES) program that will offer our elementary students the opportunity to learn Spanish beginning in Kindergarten and continue on up through high school.
Beginning in the 2008-09 school year, Kindergarten students began learning Spanish 3 times a week! Instruction is based on the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century and NYS Standards for Languages Other Than English. This school year, 2012-13, we continue to offer Spanish instruction to our Kindergartners and have expanded our FLES program to include the first, second, third, and fourth grades. While the emphasis is on developing Spanish language skills, instruction also supports other content areas. Typical class activities include vocabulary games, songs, story telling, projects, cultural celebrations and total physical response activities in which students respond to aural prompts in the second language.

Currently, at the secondary level, the Hauppauge LOTE department offers opportunities to study French, German, and Spanish beginning in the 6th grade. Students typically take the FLACS Checkpoint A Exam at the end of 8th grade and the FLACS Checkpoint B Exam at the completion of level 3 of the language. Post Checkpoint B offerings include honors and non-honors level courses and the option of taking AP or IB Language courses in one of our three languages: French, German, and Spanish.
